URCC 19075: MULTI-CENTER RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED PHASE II TRIAL OF EXERCISE TO TREAT CHEMOTHERAPY-INDUCED PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY (CIPN)
Why?
CIPN is a potentially severe dose-limiting chemotoxicity that occurs in 2 of 3 patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, pain, cold sensitivity in the hands and feet that can lead to issues with balance, falls, and fine motor tasks like texting, writing, and buttoning clothes. There are extremely limited treatments for CIPN and exercise is arguably the most promising yet unproven potential treatment for CIPN.
What?
URCC 19075 is a phase II randomized controlled trial to test the effects of 6 weeks of walking and resistance exercise on CIPN symptom severity in 120 patients with cancer.
Who?
- Patients with ANY cancer.
- Moderate CIPN symptoms.
- Received neurotoxic chemotherapy in the past 9 months or are still on neurotoxic chemotherapy (e.g., taxane, platinum, vinca alkaloid, epothilone, proteasome inhibitor).
- Not currently exercising but are safe to do so. See protocol for details.
Patients will receive
- Free exercise kit, pedometer, and instruction for all patients (even those randomized to control).
- $50 for participating, and an extra $125 for each optional brain MRI scan.
- Research shows that exercise can improve fatigue, health-related quality of life, and mood, and might also improve neuropathy.
